Modelisation and representation of expression data in Ascidians: The virtual ascidian embryo project
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ascidians are marine invertebrate chordates, which display a larval body plan similar to that of vertebrates. Their embryos are composed of a small number of cells and develop with an invariant cell lineage. In addition, genomes for two species are available [1]. These characteristics make this system a unique opportunity to understand the developmental strategies of a chordate at the embryological, genetic and molecular level. While more and more data become available for this model, the need of an informatics system able to correlate different kind of information with an efficient knowledge representation system becomes essential. The ANISEED (Ascidian Network for In Situ Expression and Embryological Data) system has been designed to offer an advanced database able to relate expression data with other knowledge fields such as lineage, induction, cell fates, genomic information, or blastomere position and morphology in the developing embryo. Data can be accessed through a web portal, but ANISEED also provides a virtual 3D embryo to display the information in an interactive manner.

Anteroposterior patterning of the epidermis
Patterning along the anteroposterior axis is a critical step during animal embryogenesis. In the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS), the patterned neural tube is characterized by regionspecific expression of many genes including homeobox genes such as dlx, otx, pax, Hox and cdx cognates (e.g., McGinnis and Krumlauf, 1992; Shimamura et al., 1995). The patterning of the vertebrate neural tub...
متن کاملIdentification of Ascidians (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) around Larak Island in the Persian Gulf
Despite the variety of marine organisms recorded from the Persian Gulf, acidians located along the Persian Gulf have not received much attention. We collected Ascidian samples from four sites along Larak Island (Persian Gulf) using Scuba diving and snorkeling at a depth that ranged from 5-15 m. Taxonomic identification was carried out by authoritative keys and texts. We found 4 species that be...
متن کاملExpression of the labial group Hox gene HrHox-1 and its alteration induced by retinoic acid in development of the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi.
Ascidian embryogenesis shares several developmental features with vertebrates. Thus, it is presumed that some molecular mechanisms that are critical for vertebrate development may also act in the early development of ascidians. Here, we investigated expression of the ascidian labial group Hox gene HrHox-1 in the development of Halocynthia roretzi. HrHox-1 showed a spatially restricted expressio...
متن کاملAnalyzing gene regulation in ascidian embryos: new tools for new perspectives.
Ascidians are marine protochordates at the evolutionary boundary between invertebrates and vertebrates. Ascidian larvae provide a simple system for unraveling gene regulation networks underlying the formation of the basic chordate body plan. After being used for over a century as a model for embryological studies, ascidians have become, in the past decade, an increasingly popular organism for s...
متن کاملREVIEWS–A PEER REVIEWED FORUM Ciona intestinalis: Chordate Development Made Simple
Thanks to their transparent and rapidly developing mosaic embryos, ascidians (or sea squirts) have been a model system for embryological studies for over a century. Recently, ascidians have entered the postgenomic era, with the sequencing of the Ciona intestinalis genome and the accumulation of molecular resources that rival those available for fruit flies and mice. One strength of ascidians as...
